Welcome to the Land of Enchantment!
New Mexico is one of the largest and least populated states in the country, comprised of cultures, families and histories far older than our country and state’s constitutions and physical boundaries. Home to 19 sovereign Pueblo nations along with the country’s largest Native American tribe and reservation – the Navajo Nation – and an incredibly rich and vibrant Hispanic and Latino cultures, it is a place whose multicultural story is being written every day, filled equally with tragedy and hope. Beautiful and rugged, containing fauna, flora and animal life ranging from arid to alpine, with clear and undammed mountain rivers and prehistoric geological spectacles, there are no grander or more gorgeous places anywhere. Once you visit, you’ll see why New Mexico is referred to it as the Land of Enchantment!
The Albuquerque metropolitan area is the largest in New Mexico, with a population of more than 900,000 people. The state capital, Santa Fe, founded in 1610, is located 60 miles to the north, and has a population of 70,000 people. All the states’ level III/IV NICUs are concentrated in the Albuquerque area:
- The Children’s Center at Presbyterian/Pediatrix Medical Group: has a very busy and high acuity NICU, with the state’s only Pediatric CT surgery program and an average daily census of 55 babies.
- The University of New Mexico is the academic institution for the state, with the only Pediatric ENT and Pediatric Neurosurgery programs.
- Lovelace Women’s Hospital: has a busy level III NICU, though with limited Pediatric subspecialty support.
New Mexico was the proud host of the 44th Annual AAP District VIII SONPM Conference, the first virtual meeting held by the organization.
