Neonatology in British Columbia (BC)
There is one Level IV NICU and three Level III NICUs in BC. The largest is situated in Vancouver at the BC Children’s and Women’s Hospitals (Provincial Health Services Authority), with 2 NICUs within Fraser Health Authority in New Westminster (Royal Columbian Hospital), and Surrey (Surrey Memorial Hospital) and one NICU in Victoria on Vancouver Island (Island Health). Provincial services are linked through Perinatal Services BC, which works towards optimizing maternal, neonatal and fetal health through educational support to care providers, outcome analysis, networks and multidisciplinary perinatal guidelines.
The Neonatal Program at BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre provides quaternary level NICU care, complex-care for transition home on technology, combined Mother-baby level 2 care, a neurodevelopmental follow-up program and a provincial Neonatal Transport service which covers all of BC and the Yukon Territory. Dr Julia Charlton (julia.charlton@cw.bc.ca) is the Senior Medical Director of the Neonatal Program at BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre, and has been the BC representative to the AAP District VIII Council since 2025.

The University of British Columbia Neonatal-Perinatal fellowship program is based at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospitals under the Division of Neonatology (Neonatology – Department of Pediatrics). The Division offers 2-year neonatal fellowships with opportunities for a 3rd year fellowship in a focused area of Neonatology including Neonatal Neurology and Neonatal Hemodynamics & Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography.
The Division Head is Dr Emily Kieran and the fellowship program director is Dr Tapas Kulkarni. The faculty of the Division of Neonatology is made up of Neonatologists, Clinical Associate Pediatricians, nurse practitioners, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellows and research affiliates.
